Anki vs Quizlet

Anki and Quizlet both store flashcards. Choose by the study unit and the time horizon.

Anki is the stronger fit for a large collection of atomic cards you schedule yourself for months. After Show Answer, you rate recall: Again, Hard, Good, or Easy. The desktop app is free on Windows, macOS, and Linux. AnkiWeb is a free sync and online-study service. Anki can schedule with its older SM-2-based algorithm or with FSRS. You turn FSRS on in deck options. It targets a retention rate you choose, 90% by default.

Quizlet is the stronger fit for a shared class set or a public set, and for scored practice on a near horizon. The unit is a study set. Three loops use that set separately: the Flashcards flip, scored Learn and Test, and a website Flashcards mode where you rate Repeat, Hard, Okay, or Easy. Quizlet announced that spacing mode on 4 August 2026. Australia and Canada help articles document it on the website, with coarse intervals. Learn is scored adaptive practice on the set. The website mode is a self-rated schedule. Keep those two apart from each other, and apart from Anki's FSRS.

When the material should stay a page, neither card app is the job. Notes vs flashcards is that decision.

What each product is

Anki is a flashcard app. Four surfaces can share one collection after you sync.

• Desktop is the free app for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
• AnkiWeb is the free service for sync and for studying in a browser.
• AnkiMobile is the paid App Store app for iPhone and iPad. One purchase covers up to five devices on the same Apple ID, with Family Sharing. The official FAQ does not state today's price.

Quizlet is a study-set product on the web and in the iOS and Android apps. You open a set and choose a mode. The set is what a class or a public page shares. The mode is what you do with those terms in this sitting.

Decks and study sets

Anki's library is decks of cards. The card is the thing you review. Each card can carry its own history, so a miss on one fact does not have to drag the whole list forward.

Quizlet's library is study sets: a term, a definition, and whatever else the author attached. Diagram sets are a Plus feature. You share, join, or practice the set. Modes run against that list.

A 40-word chapter list can live in either product. The work around it differs. In Anki you keep a deck and a per-card schedule. In Quizlet you keep, or you join, a set, then you pick Flashcards, Learn, Test, or the website spacing mode when you study.

Who assigns the grade

The next session depends on who files the result.

Anki

Anki shows the answer and asks you to rate recall. The buttons are Again, Hard, Good, and Easy. That rating is the scheduling signal for the card. Anki does not turn it into an automatic exam score.

Learn and Test

Learn is scored adaptive practice on a set. Quizlet runs the round and scores it. Most people need Plus for ongoing Learn use. A student added to a teacher's class can use Learn and Test on that class's sets without their own subscription.

Test is a separate quiz built from the set. Practice Tests are another mode, described as AI-generated, and they are distinct from Test. A score from one of these sittings belongs to that sitting. It is a different signal from the Again / Hard / Good / Easy rating stored on an Anki card.

Flashcards, including the spacing ratings

Classic Flashcards are a flip: term, then definition. They count as retrieval when you try to answer before you flip. The flip itself does not file a long-horizon grade.

The spacing mode announced on 4 August 2026, as Australia and Canada help articles document it, stays inside website Flashcards. You rate Repeat, Hard, Okay, or Easy. You assign that rating. The help text then describes a coarse return. That rating is not an exam score, and it is not Learn's score.

Three Quizlet loops, two kinds of judge:

• Flashcards flip: you look, and you move on.
• Learn and Test: Quizlet scores the sitting.
• Website Flashcards spacing: you self-rate on Repeat, Hard, Okay, Easy.

Anki's review loop has one judge: you, after Show Answer.

How each scheduler behaves

Spaced repetition means a gap before the next retrieval, instead of stacking every pass into one sitting. Anki and Quizlet both offer ways to leave that gap. They do not offer the same scheduler.

Anki: SM-2-based, or FSRS if you turn it on

Anki can schedule with its older SM-2-based algorithm or with FSRS. Scheduling stays on the SM-2-based algorithm until you enable FSRS. The deck-options toggle applies across presets; you cannot leave FSRS on for one preset and off for another. Once FSRS is on, it targets a retention rate you choose, 90% by default. FSRS is not already the scheduler on every install.

The schedule is per card, from the rating you gave after you saw the answer.

Quizlet Learn: adaptive practice on the set

Learn adjusts which terms you see while you work through a set. The point is scored practice on that list. It does not keep Anki's per-card FSRS state. An adaptive round is still Learn.

Quizlet's website spacing mode

Australia and Canada help articles document a website Flashcards mode. You rate Repeat, Hard, Okay, or Easy. The help text says Repeat returns within minutes, Hard soon, Okay typically in about a day, and Easy in four or more days. New cards per day is configurable. Those articles document the mode on the website. The algorithm is not named. Availability can vary by region, so treat the mode as documented there, not as a control on every phone and in every locale.

Those intervals are the help text's description of a coarse set schedule. They are separate from Learn's score, and separate from the FSRS retention target you set in Anki.

Shared decks and class sets

Quizlet is built for material other people can open. A teacher's class, or a public set, is a normal way to get the list. Students added to a class can use Learn and Test on that class's sets without their own subscription. If the value is "the set is already here, and the class is already here," Quizlet matches that setup.

Anki sharing is a file you import. You import a shared deck in the desktop app or a mobile app, then sync. You cannot add that deck directly to an AnkiWeb account. After the import, the cards are in your collection, on your schedule.

People share large medical decks for Anki. Those decks are community collections. They are not an official Anki product.

What you pay for

Anki's desktop app is free. AnkiWeb sync and online study are free. AnkiDroid is free and maintained separately. AnkiMobile is a paid App Store purchase. One purchase covers up to five devices on the same Apple ID, with Family Sharing. The official FAQ does not state today's price, so this page does not print one.

Quizlet's shape is a free account, Plus with monthly usage caps, Plus Unlimited with higher limits, and Plus for teachers. Plus caps Learn at 20 rounds per month. That figure is a cap on the Plus plan, not a count of free-tier rounds. Diagram sets are a Plus feature. Teacher and group plans are not given dollar prices here.

Quizlet's upgrade page, in the annual view checked on 22 September 2026, listed Plus at $35.99 per year and Plus Unlimited at $44.99 per year. The page also showed those as about $2.99/month and $3.75/month equivalents of the annual price. Prices can vary by country. Those equivalents are not a separate monthly subscription price, and a separate monthly subscription price is not stated here.

Pay for the loop you will actually run. Ongoing Learn for your own sets sits on Plus for most people. A class set opened from the teacher's class is the exception already noted. A personal Anki deck on desktop does not need a subscription. AnkiMobile is a one-time App Store purchase, not a subscription.

What works without a connection

Desktop Anki keeps the collection on the computer. Internet is required to sync, or to study through AnkiWeb. It is not required to open a collection already on the machine. This page does not describe AnkiMobile or AnkiDroid offline behavior.

Quizlet's offline help covers Flashcards and Match in the iOS and Android apps, including keeping recent sets. Subscription copy also treats offline as a paid benefit. The documented offline activities are Flashcards and Match on the mobile apps.

Drafting help is not the queue

Quizlet's current AI helpers can draft a set, a study guide, or a practice test. Access depends on plan or language. You can edit the draft before you publish. Q-Chat ended after 30 June 2025. It is not a 2026 study mode.

A drafted set is still a set. You still choose Flashcards, Learn, Test, or the website spacing mode. The helper does not replace a long-horizon scheduler.

How to choose

Match the unit, then the horizon.

Choose Anki when the item is one fact, the collection is large, and you want each card back over months under a schedule you control. You will rate Again, Hard, Good, or Easy yourself. Desktop and AnkiWeb are free. AnkiMobile is the paid Apple app, with the five-device and Family Sharing terms above.

Choose Quizlet when the item is a shared set and the date is soon: a class list, a public set, a quiz this week. Use Learn or Test when you want the product to score the sitting. Use website Flashcards spacing when you want the coarse self-ratings those help articles describe, and when that mode is available on your account. Classmates or a teacher already in Quizlet are part of the product, not a side feature.

Choose neither card app when splitting the material into terms would throw away the explanation. Keep the page. If you wanted notes plus review instead of an Anki card collection, that menu is Anki alternatives for notes. If you have already decided to leave Quizlet, match the job you are leaving on Quizlet alternatives for spaced repetition. This page stays with the Anki or Quizlet choice.

Medical school and languages

For medicine, use the same split. A large deck of atomic cards — a drug, a label, a single step you are willing to isolate — scheduled across months fits Anki. You rate each card. A lecturer's set for this block, shared with the class, or a public set you want to score before a quiz, fits Quizlet. Community medical decks you import into Anki are other people's collections, not an Anki product. This page does not use exam results as evidence for either app.

For a language, a personal vocabulary collection you expect to keep for months fits Anki's card queue. A class set, or a public list you need before a test this month, fits Quizlet. A usage note or a grammar explanation you want intact is the page case, not a winner between the two card apps.

Moving a set you created

Quizlet lets you copy your own set out as text from the website. Images are not exported. A set you copied from another user cannot be exported. Anki can import that text when you save it as UTF-8 plain text with comma, semicolon, or tab separators. Anki's own export includes text, .apkg, and .colpkg.

For a set you created:

1. On the Quizlet website, copy the terms and definitions.
2. Save the copy as UTF-8 plain text, with a comma, semicolon, or tab between fields.
3. Import that file in Anki.

Images stay behind. Shared decks from other people follow Anki's import path — desktop or mobile app, then sync — not a direct add to an AnkiWeb account. Third-party Quizlet importer add-ons are outside this page. They are not an official path.

The move copies terms into cards. It does not copy Learn scores, class membership, or the website spacing history into Anki's scheduler. After the import, you are on Anki's SM-2-based algorithm or on FSRS if you enable it, and you grade the cards yourself.

When the review unit is a page

If the thing you need to remember is a page or an explanation you do not want to split into terms, keep it as a note and review that page. Yuhimo does that.

A page stays an ordinary note until you turn learning on. Learning is not turned on automatically. During review, the prompt is "How well did you remember this?" The grades in the live English UI are Forgot, Barely, Remembered, and Easily. Those ratings are self-assessment. Yuhimo does not score correctness, and it does not decide whether an answer was right.

Yuhimo schedules the page with FSRS-light. That is Yuhimo's lightweight scheduler. It is a different model from the FSRS you can enable in Anki.

AI in Yuhimo can draft a page or recall questions for you to edit. It does not grade the review, and it does not set the schedule.

Anki remains the better card driller for a large atomic collection. Quizlet remains the better class-set tool. Yuhimo is the page case only.
