How to Organize Notes for Studying: A Simple System
Learn how to organize study notes by course, topic, and focused page without building a complicated system or reorganizing everything repeatedly.

Your notes are organized well enough when you can answer three questions: Where does this course live? Which page has the topic I need? What can I explain, solve, or recall from that page?
That takes less structure than most systems promise. You do not need a perfect archive, a complicated tag scheme, or one format for every subject. You need a small system that helps you find the right material, see how it fits together, and begin studying without another cleanup session.

Give every course one home
Give each course one clearly named home: a notebook, folder, or parent page. Use a familiar name such as Biology 201 or Calculus II, not a vague container such as Notes.
Keep lecture notes, reading notes, worked examples, assignment corrections, and study questions in that course home. This does not mean one enormous document. It means every item has an unambiguous course-level location.
If material could fit two courses, keep the original where you are most likely to study it and add a reference from the other course if needed. Duplicating a whole note creates two versions to maintain.
Organize by topic; keep dates as context
Dates tell you when you captured a note. Topics tell you where to look when an exam asks about glycolysis, integration by parts, or classical conditioning.
Use a date when sequence or provenance matters—lecture records, labs, feedback, or a syllabus reference—but pair it with a topic:

If your notes began as dated lecture pages, do not rewrite them all. Add the actual topic to the title and place or link the page under the appropriate topic when you next need it.
Keep the hierarchy shallow
A useful hierarchy separates major subjects but does not make you remember a filing theory. For most courses, three levels are enough:

This is practical guidance, not a universal taxonomy. A short course may need only one topic level; a textbook-heavy course may need units above topics. The test is whether you can predict where a new note belongs.
Avoid paths such as Semester → Course → Module → Week → Lecture → Topic → Note Type. If adjacent levels each contain one item, one probably does not need to exist.
Make each note a bounded study unit
A focused note covers an amount you can understand and work with in one attempt. It can be a concept, process, comparison, argument, problem type, or tightly connected group of ideas.
Keep material together when the parts explain one idea, need the same context, and would usually be studied together. Split it when the title needs “and several other things,” you repeatedly scroll past unrelated material, or separate concepts need different examples or study actions.
Do not split at an arbitrary word count. A long explanation can be coherent; a short page containing three unrelated lecture fragments may need dividing. Name a page for the question or topic you expect to search for later. Week 6 Notes hides its purpose; How Action Potentials Propagate reveals it.
Use the format that reveals the subject
Formatting should expose the material’s structure rather than decorate every page alike.

For a conceptual page, try Core idea → Key parts → Relationships → Example → Common confusion → Questions to try. A problem-solving page might use When it applies → Steps → Worked example → Why the steps work → New problem.

Turn capture into something you can study
Lecture capture is allowed to be messy: shorthand, copied definitions, examples, and reminders in the order they arrived. Before you study it, make the minimum edits needed to reveal the subject:
- Rename the page for its real topic.
- Add headings for the main ideas.
- Remove obvious duplicates and logistics.
- Mark gaps rather than guessing.
- Add an example, comparison, or prompt where it clarifies the page.
- Split only sections that have become independent topics.

Example: rescue a scattered psychology course
Suppose your files are Psych Notes Sept, Week 4 Reading, Lecture Tuesday, and Midterm Stuff. The lecture page mixes classical conditioning, an assignment announcement, and operant conditioning. Rather than rewrite everything, build this:

Move the assignment announcement to a task or syllabus note. Keep classical conditioning together as a page with its core idea, terms, process, example, common confusion, and two questions to try. Move the operant-conditioning fragment because it is a separate mechanism. Turn the midterm list into an index pointing to the relevant topics instead of another copy of their content.
Now the course is not a pristine archive. It is a navigable set of pages with a concrete study action.
Rescue messy notes in passes
Do not rebuild an entire semester before an exam. First create one home for each active course. Next, move obvious material and leave ambiguous items in To Sort. Then name and group the topics needed for the next class, assignment, or exam. Prepare individual pages only as you open them to study. Finally, archive finished logistics and duplicate exports so they do not compete with current material.
The same logic works on paper with dividers, an index, and clear titles. Paper can make free-form diagrams easy and reduce digital distraction; digital notes can make search, rearrangement, and linking easy. Neither is categorically better.
