AI question generation limits

Understand when AI question generation works, what limits apply, and why Yuhimo may generate fewer questions than expected.

AI question generation is a helper for creating study prompts faster.

It reads your page content or a selection you choose, suggests questions and answers, and gives you editable drafts. It does not decide what you know or grade your recall.

Yuhimo applies practical limits so generation stays predictable and the output stays useful.

What AI generation does

AI generation helps you turn notes into recall prompts.

  • Reads page content or selected text
  • Suggests questions and suggested answers
  • Creates optional prompts you can keep, edit, or delete
  • May use existing questions as context to avoid repeating the same ideas

The questions are starting points. You remain responsible for choosing which prompts are worth keeping and how well you remembered the page during review.

See AI question generation for the overall workflow.

Full page vs selected text

You can generate from the full page or from text you select inside the page.

  • Full page — useful when you want broader coverage of the note
  • Selected text — useful for one paragraph, concept, definition, or code block

Selection is often better on long pages because it keeps the source focused. If the selected text is very short, generation may not produce useful results or may return nothing.

AI needs enough meaningful source text to infer what is worth asking.

Generation limits

Yuhimo applies limits at two levels:

  • Up to 5 question-and-answer pairs per generation
  • Up to 50 AI-generated question-and-answer pairs per user per day

Very short source text may be ignored or may produce no result. Selected text generally needs at least about 30 characters of meaningful content before generation runs. Yuhimo also deduplicates generated pairs before saving so you do not get identical prompts stacked on the same page.

These limits keep generation predictable, reduce noisy output, and help you review drafts instead of accepting large batches blindly.

Why fewer questions may be generated

You may receive fewer than 5 pairs in a single generation. That is normal.

  • The source text does not contain enough meaningful material
  • Existing questions already cover the same ideas
  • The page has little factual or conceptual content to ask about
  • Generated pairs were duplicates of prompts already on the page
  • The selected text is too narrow for more than one or two useful questions
  • The AI output was weak and not worth saving after review

Fewer useful questions is usually better than many weak ones. Edit or delete weak prompts and generate again from a more focused section if needed.

Technical vs general content

Yuhimo may adapt question style to the kind of content on the page.

  • Technical notes — concepts, behavior, APIs, edge cases, constraints, or code-related ideas
  • General notes — facts, definitions, relationships, causes, or main ideas

The goal is still the same: useful recall prompts tied to what you wrote. You should review generated questions either way — especially for code, formulas, or project-specific details.

What AI does not do

AI question generation does not replace your role in learning.

  • AI does not grade you
  • AI does not verify your answers during review
  • AI does not replace self-assessment with Again, Hard, Good, or Easy
  • Generated questions are not mandatory flashcards

See What AI does not do, Why AI is a helper, and Self-Assessment.

Best practices

  • On long pages, generate from a focused section or selection first
  • Review generated questions before relying on them in review
  • Delete weak, vague, or duplicate questions
  • Rewrite questions in your own words when that improves recall
  • Use questions as recall anchors, not as the only way to study the page
  • Watch the daily limit if you generate heavily across many pages

See Edit generated questions for how to improve drafts.

FAQ

Why did AI generate fewer than 5 questions?
A generation can produce up to 5 pairs, but Yuhimo may save fewer when the source text is thin, ideas are already covered, or duplicates would be added. Quality and deduplication matter more than hitting the maximum.
Why did nothing generate?
Common reasons include source text that is too short, little meaningful content to ask about, or nothing new to add after existing questions. Try a longer selection or a more substantive section of the page.
Can I generate from selected text?
Yes. Select the passage you want to focus on and generate from that selection. This is often better on long pages.
Can AI grade my answer?
No. You grade your own recall with Again, Hard, Good, or Easy during review. AI only helps create question drafts.
Are generated questions required?
No. Questions are optional. You can review a page without questions or write your own manually.
What happens when I reach the daily limit?
After 50 AI-generated question-and-answer pairs in a day, further generation is blocked until the next day. You can still edit existing questions, write manual questions, and review normally.
