Offline mode

Offline mode gives you read-only access to cached Yuhimo data.

When your browser has a recent offline cache, you can open Yuhimo without internet and read available notes. This is useful when you need access to your knowledge base while traveling, during unstable connection, or when the server is temporarily unavailable.

Offline mode is mainly for reading.

If the data is already cached in your browser, you can open notes, read page content, view questions, and use available local navigation or search.

Offline mode does not allow actions that change your workspace.

Creating, editing, moving, deleting, rating, importing, restoring, trash actions, and AI generation require an internet connection.

Trash, restore from trash, and permanent delete are not available offline. See Trash and restore.

When offline access is enabled, Yuhimo stores a local read-only snapshot of workspace data on that device.

• Pages and page content
• Page hierarchy needed for navigation
• Questions and answers saved on those pages
• Basic learning status shown with cached pages
• Some account settings used by the app on that device

The cache is meant for access while offline, not as a complete archive of every Yuhimo feature or account state.

Note data is stored in browser local storage on your device — separate from the lightweight app shell that helps Yuhimo load as an installed web app.

Think of two layers: the app shell helps you open Yuhimo; the offline cache holds your note content for read-only access when the network is down.

Offline mode is not a full local-first editing mode. Changes you make online live on Yuhimo’s servers; the local copy is a cached snapshot for reading.

Turn on offline access in Settings while you are online. Yuhimo downloads or refreshes a local snapshot for that browser on that device.

You can refresh the cache again later while online if you want a newer copy.

If you turn offline access off, Yuhimo may still keep the existing local copy on that browser until you clear cached data in Settings. While that copy remains, you may still be able to read it in read-only mode even though new snapshots are no longer downloaded automatically.

Offline caching has size limits so storage stays predictable on your device.

• About 20 MB per note — very large single pages may not be fully cached
• About 300 MB total cache — large workspaces may not fit entirely offline

If a note or workspace exceeds these limits, some content may be missing from offline access even when offline mode is enabled. Use Yuhimo online for the full workspace, or reduce what you need available offline by organizing smaller pages.

If Yuhimo loses network access while you were using it online, it may fall back to cached read-only content when a local snapshot is available.

What you see in that moment may still reflect the last cached snapshot, not every change made elsewhere since then.

When you are online again, Yuhimo refreshes and reconciles cached data with the server.

Until that refresh completes, offline content may look outdated — for example if a page was edited, deleted, or moved on another device or in another browser.

• Reconnect to the internet and open Yuhimo while online
• Wait for the app to load current workspace data
• Use Refresh cache in Settings if offline access is enabled and you want a full snapshot update

Some changed data may remain visible in local cache until refresh completes. Pages moved to trash are usually removed from the next snapshot, but a page permanently deleted online may still appear in an old cached copy until you refresh the cache or clear local data.

That is why the cache is for access, not recovery.

Read-only offline mode is intentional. It avoids conflicts between a stale local snapshot and live server data, learning state, and review scheduling.

Editing, grading, trash, AI generation, and learning sessions all need reliable online updates.

If you were signed out while online but offline access was previously enabled on this browser, Yuhimo may still let you read the last cached snapshot in read-only mode.

That copy belongs to the account that last enabled offline access on this device. Sign in again online to edit, sync, or refresh the cache for your current account.

Offline access only works for data that has already been cached on this device.

If you open Yuhimo on a new device or clear browser storage, offline data may not be available until you enable offline access again while online.

If content changed on another device, offline data may be outdated until Yuhimo reconnects and refreshes the cache.

Learning ratings require an internet connection.

When you rate a page, Yuhimo updates its learning state, next review date, and review history. See How reviews work. Offline mode does not submit these changes.

You may still read a page and check questions offline, but you cannot start a learning or review session or record a grade until you are online.

If pages and questions were already saved and cached, you may be able to read them offline. Creating an outline, generating pages, saving generated material, or generating new questions requires online access.

Backups and restore actions require an internet connection. See Backups and restore behavior.

Backup restore adds copies to your workspace and requires an internet connection. Readable import and export also require online access. For how backup differs from export, see Import / Export.

Offline cache is stored locally in the browser on each device. For where live data is stored when online, see Where your data is stored.

A page cached on your laptop is not automatically cached in another browser or on your phone. Each device needs to load data while online before it can access it offline.

If content is not available offline:

• Open Yuhimo while online first
• Enable offline access in Settings and wait for the snapshot to finish
• Check whether the page exceeds per-note or total cache limits
• Avoid clearing browser storage on that device
• Use the same browser where offline access was enabled

If offline content looks outdated after you reconnect, wait for Yuhimo to load online data or use Refresh cache in Settings. The local copy may stay stale until refresh completes.

You open Yuhimo online before a trip.

Your notes are cached in the browser.

Later, you lose internet connection.

You can still open Yuhimo and read cached notes and questions. But you cannot edit a page, rate a review, restore a backup, or generate AI questions until you are online again.

Offline mode is not a full local-first system.

It is a read-only fallback for accessing cached knowledge when the network is unavailable.

Can I edit notes offline?

No. Offline mode is read-only. Editing requires an internet connection.

Why are some pages missing offline?

The page may not be in the local snapshot yet, may exceed the per-note cache limit, or your workspace may exceed the total cache limit. Enable or refresh offline access while online.

Why does offline content look outdated?

The local snapshot may be stale until Yuhimo reconnects and refreshes the cache. Changes made online elsewhere may not appear immediately in cached read-only mode.

What are the cache size limits?

About 20 MB per note and about 300 MB total for offline cache on a device.

Does offline cache sync across devices?

No. Offline cache is stored locally in each browser and device.

Is offline mode a backup?

No. The cache is meant for access, not recovery. Use Yuhimo backups to preserve and restore your data.
