Study material generation limits

Understand source types, size limits, online requirements, partial failures, and when generated study material can be undone.

AI in Yuhimo · Updated 2026-08-27

Study material generation is an optional helper for creating first-draft pages from a topic, pasted text, or a file.

Yuhimo applies practical limits so generation stays predictable: supported sources, file size, online access, and a review step before anything is saved.

These limits are separate from AI question generation limits. Question generation still uses its own per-run and daily caps.

What these limits cover

This article covers Create study material — the flow that can create pages.

It does not cover “Create up to 5 Q/A with AI” on an existing page. Those caps are in AI question generation limits.

Generation is online-only

Creating an outline, generating pages, saving, and undoing a generation all need an internet connection.

Offline mode can still show cached notes you already saved. It cannot start or continue study material generation.

See Offline mode and Why is offline mode read-only?.

Supported sources

You can start from:

  • A topic you describe
  • Pasted text or notes
  • A PDF or DOCX file

Other file types are not accepted. Use PDF or DOCX, or paste the text instead.

A short, vague, or empty source may produce a weak outline or no usable plan. Add more detail, or write the page yourself.

File size

Uploaded PDF and DOCX files can be up to 20 MB.

Larger files are rejected before generation starts. Split the file, export a smaller document, or paste the section you actually want to study.

Generation can fail, expire, or be cancelled

An outline or page generation can fail, time out, expire, or be cancelled.

  • Failed — start a new generation, or retry failed pages if the review screen offers it
  • Expired — the outline or generation is no longer available; start again
  • Cancelled — discarded generations are not saved into your notes

If generation stops before save, your existing notes are unchanged.

Partial failure and review before save

Some pages in a plan can succeed while others fail or need review.

  • Retry failed pages when the option is available
  • Remove pages you do not want to keep, if the remaining plan stays valid
  • Save stays unavailable while failed or needs-review pages remain

This keeps incomplete or blocked drafts out of your notes. Review the remaining pages before you save.

The full workflow is in Create study material with AI.

Nothing is saved until you confirm

Discarding or cancelling a generation does not create pages, questions, or learning items.

After save, generated pages are normal pages. Learning is still off unless you add selected pages in Set up learning.

Undo window

After save, undo is available only for a limited time.

When the undo window ends, generated pages stay in your notes like any other pages. You can still edit them, move them, or send them to trash.

Undo also skips generated content you already edited. The undo summary shows what will be reverted and what will be kept.

See Trash and restore if undo moves pages to trash.

Learning is not automatic

Generation never starts a review session and never adds pages to the learning queue by itself.

A large study tree can create many pages. Choose which pages to add to learning, or skip that step.

See Turn on learning and How reviews work.

FAQ

Can I generate study material offline?
No. Creating an outline, generating pages, saving, and undo all need an internet connection.
Which files can I upload?
PDF and DOCX files, up to 20 MB. Other file types are not accepted.
Why can’t I save the generated pages?
Save stays unavailable while failed or needs-review pages remain. Retry or remove those pages first.
If generation fails, are pages added to my notes?
No. Existing notes stay unchanged until a generation is saved.
Do question-generation daily caps apply here?
No. Those caps apply to creating questions on an existing page. See AI question generation limits.
Can I undo after I edit generated pages?
Undo keeps content you edited. Unedited generated pages and blocks can still be reverted while the undo window is open.
